Visitors move mirrors to bounce laser beams through a semi-dark environment. Bursts of mist reveal the location of the beams and guide visitors as they create structures with light. Visitors notice that a laser beam reflected off a mirror acts as an optical lever, making small vibrations in the mirror highly visible at a distance. Spinning mirrors mounted near the top of the structure reflect cones of laser light through the mist and onto the fabric structure of the exhibit. We are developing a version of this exhibit in which white light and optical devices take the place of lasers.
