This exhibit simulates the experience of using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Visitors choose from 20 samples that are held in small glowing boxes. When they press one of the boxes, the computer screen displays the SEM image of the object in the box. Visitors use a joystick to pan the image around and use buttons to select areas for higher magnification and to zoom in and out over several orders of magnitude.
The samples are chosen for their visual appeal and are photographed at many levels of magnification. They include everyday items (pocket lint, insects, cloth, grains of sand from different beaches, pollen) and esoteric items (integrated circuits, chips of various alloys, cancer cells). The text that accompanies each image draws attention to special features and encourages comparison between samples.
