This exhibit helps visitors appreciate the one musical instrument they carry everywhere they go - their voice. This exhibit takes a visitor's speaking or singing voice and transforms it in interesting ways. Half of the 20 transformations are dramatic and often humorous (like
Cartoon Voice and
Voice of the Gods ), while the other half are designed to enhance a singing voice by adding harmony and by making small corrections of pitch.
It is often challenging to manage the sound from an exhibit like this in a museum space. When visitors first walk up to the microphone and make a sound, the transformed sound comes out of speakers so that they get an immediate reaction from the exhibit. But once visitors have discovered the exhibit, they almost always pick up the headphones which automatically switches the external speakers off. At either end of this exhibit, visitors can hold down a button to send their transformed voice to the other person. That way
Evil Voice can talk to
Jazz Singer.
