Changing Room
Changing Room is an immersive open-air chamber of moving, glittering, reflective scales that respond to wind, sunlight, artificial light and people moving it. It creates moving colored light effects on the land, on participants, and when looking at the sculpture. It is highly interactive for one or many people and creates light and sound effects that activates an area larger than itself.
What initially feels playful gradually becomes psychologically complex, blurring the line between private and public experience. The work explores how identity is shaped through observation, presentation, and environment. Changing rooms are spaces where people rehearse versions of themselves, evaluating how they appear before re-entering the world. By isolating and exaggerating this familiar experience within an immersive sculptural environment, Changing Room transforms a common social ritual into an act of self-awareness and collective participation.
Like many of Creative Machines’ works, Changing Room operates simultaneously as sculpture, architecture, and social experiment. The way it interacts with the wind, sun and landscape builds on Land Art while the way it uses light as a material builds on Light and Space. The installation invites visitors to confront the tension between how we see ourselves and how we believe we are seen by others, using beauty, humor, and spatial disorientation to create moments of reflection, vulnerability, and connection.
Currently housed at Second Sky, our partner non-profit community center, Changing Room is available for temporary installations, festivals, exhibitions, and future permanent placement.
