From Little Acorns

From Little Acorns is a luminous landmark inside the Raleigh Union Bus Station at 200 South West Street. Standing 10 feet tall and over 7 feet wide, the stainless-steel sculpture takes the form of an acorn, a symbol deeply tied to Raleigh’s identity as the “City of Oaks.” Crafted from 316 stainless steel with an illuminated core, the piece glows from within, transforming the transit hub into a welcoming and inspiring civic space. The sculpture installation marked the official opening of the bus facility and serves as a landmark for the GO Triangle transit routes.

The artwork celebrates growth, potential, and transformation, reminding visitors that even the largest oak begins as a small seed. By day, the polished steel reflects its surroundings with quiet strength; by night, the acorn becomes a beacon of light and connection for travelers and the community alike. Through programmed LED lighting cycles, the sculpture delivers a controlled spectrum of color projections, creating a consistently evolving experience for viewers.

Commissioned as part of the city’s Art in Transit program and designed by Creative Machines, From Little Acorns blends durability with beauty, offering both a contemporary artwork and a timeless emblem of Raleigh’s character.
