Interactive Exhibit Detail Designer

We are seeking a detail designer focusing on interactive museum exhibits to join the team. All candidates must have a basic working knowledge of mechanical assemblies, have strong problem solving skills, bring a willingness to learn, and a professional attitude. This position is suited to people with an industrial design, engineering, or fabrication background.


Work Hours are 5 days a week, 9am - 5:30pm (including a 30 minute unpaid lunch), Monday through Friday. Remote work is possible for this position depending on qualifications. Contract work is also possible.
 

All candidates must be able to occasionally travel out of town on project installations. 

 

While Creative Machines makes creative work, the company is a production shop. We are not what you might think of as a studio of independent artists.

Requirements:

  • 3D modeling skills using Solidworks (primarily) and Rhinoceros  

  • Able to produce fabrication and assembly drawing for clients and fabricators

  • Create BOMs and material orders for purchasing

  • Experience working in fabrication or with fabricators

  • Able to work on challenging and open ended problems

  • Able to incorporate aesthetic/visual feedback alongside functional requirements

  • Able to coordinate with other members of the company (electronics, fabrication, project managers) and sometimes outside professional clients. This includes clearly communicating design intent, progress updates, and seeking guidance when needed.

  • Able to be flexible and work on multiple short and long-term projects at the same time

  • Able to design toward a set of fabrication techniques and tools available in our shop or specific subcontractors

  • Self motivated, able to stay on task, and organized

Ideal candidates may also have any of the following:

  • College degree in mechanical, industrial, drafting or related engineering/design field

  • Experience running Solidworks Simulation on parts or small assemblies

  • Experience producing multiple design iterations dependent on prototyping and testing

  • Experience detailing climbing structures
